frequently asked questions
Q: Who will be caring for my pet?
A: Katelyn is the salon owner and only stylist currently at The Beauty Pawlor; she is also the resident Behavior Consultant. Josh is our Prep Groomer- he brushes teeth, cleans ears, trims nails, bathes, applies topical solutions, blow-dries, brushes, combs, and prepares the coat for trimming. Katelyn completes all haircuts, cat grooming,hand-stripping, and color work as Stylist, and in her capacity as Behavior Consultant develops individualized handling plans for every pet so that we can work with pets to complete services safely- even geriatric, special-needs, fearful, anxious, or aggressive pets whose grooming might normally be considered high-risk.
Q: How long will my pet be at your salon?
A: Most pets getting a Full-Service Bath with no trimming are ready to go in 1-3 hours, depending on the pet's size and coat typ. Most pets getting a Full-Service Groom are ready to go in 3 to 4 hours. Large breeds with long coats, or any pet whose grooming requires advanced application of skill, may take longer. All pets are kept comfortable with padded mats on grooming tables, periodic breaks, frequent access to water, and treats as permitted by the owner.
Q: How many other pets will you be working on while my pet is there?
A: We are a deliberately low-volume salon in the interest of keeping a calm, quiet atmosphere. For dogs, we schedule one dog per groomer at a time, with the exception of multi-dog families. We currently have 2 service providers. As a result, there are generally only 1-3 dogs in the salon at any one time. For cats, we schedule one at a time in a separate "mini-salon" in the back, away from dogs.
Q: Will my pet be kenneled?
A: Like a vet's office, it's important for professional groomers to keep kennels on hand for a number of reasons, most of which can be simplified to the safety and comfort of the pets in our care. Kennels are required to maintain our AKC Safety Certification. Kennels are kept in the main salon room in full view of staff at all times; pets are never left unattended. If you prefer your pet not be kenneled at all, please let us know at booking so we can schedule to accommodate your request safely.

Q: Can I stay to watch while my pet is groomed?
A: You are more than welcome to drop by for a brief visit to see how we do things when other pets are in the salon. However, pets typically become excited when and their owners walk through the door. This creates an unsafe situation when the dog is on the grooming table, working with sharp scissors and clippers. Therefore, with the exception of very rare cases which are discussed beforehand when necessary, we ask that you plan to leave your pet with us and wait to pick up the until you have received a call from us.
Q: I called and received no response. How can I get in touch?
A: We typically limit the number of times we answer the phone during grooming hours to keep our focus on the pets in our care and keep grooming times down. Calls are answered at the beginning and end of each day. We are a busy salon with only 2 groomers and we are only human, so if you don't hear from us within 5 business days, try again- we're not ignoring you! We can also be reached via text message at our salon number, (603)380-5453. We always answer or return calls immediately from owners with pets currently in the salon.
Q: How far in advance should I book my appointment?
A: Many of our clients schedule all of their appointments for the whole year at 3-to 6-week intervals in January; most of our remaining clients pre-book their next visit before they leave their appointment. This leaves scheduling space limited for short-notice booking. Please be prepared to wait 4-6 weeks for an appointment if you don't have one pre-scheduled. Space is particularly limited for cats, so we especially recommend pre-booking cat visits as early as possible.
Q: I have an elderly pet who has difficulty standing for any length of time. What can be done to make my pet more comfortable during the grooming process?
A: We give particularly attentive care to senior pets in our salon. All senior pets who suffer from arthritis, hip dysplasia, or muscle soreness are treated to a joint-soothing liniment soak during the bath. Our large-dog grooming table and our bath tub are mounted on electric lifts to make it easy for pets to step up or be lifted without jumping; small pets are simply lifted or carried. Overhead bars on the tables and tub allow us to use belly supports and suspension rigs to reduce physical stress and make staying upright easier. Contoured cushions are available for additional hip support.
Q: I have a pet with special health requirements. Are considerations taken for pets with special needs?
A: Yes. Exactly what precautions we take will vary depending on the pet's condition; for example, pets with trachea concerns will have grooming loops harnessed under the arm rather than around the neck, diabetic pets will have frequent breaks to drink water and urinate as needed, etc. We are certified to manage a wide range of safety concerns for all pets and well-versed in the administration of first aid, and within a few minutes' drive of 3 great animal hospitals in the unlikely case of emergency.
